Republic "Montevideo Siege" Peso 1844 MS64 NGC, Montevideo mint, KM5, Elizondo-1. Coin alignment. The legendary "Peso Fuerte" struck during the Montevideo Siege to help defray the costs of the conflict and to reward those who had defended the city. Of paramount importance in Uruguayan numismatics, the type was the first to bear Uruguay's national coat of arms and only struck to an amount of 1,500 pieces. Among the finest specimens that we've handled, this example presents gently toned surfaces and crisply struck devices throughout.
