1794 1C Head of 1794, S-31, B-13, R.1, AU58 PCGS. Heck Die State 1. The obverse has prominent die chips behind the hair strands, resulting in the "Marred Field" nickname for this obverse that also appears on S-30. This virtually Mint State cent is lustrous light brown and tan, the latter faded from mint red. Hints of light orange color are seen inside the right branch of the wreath with mahogany toning splashes in the left obverse field.      The provenance page of the 1794largecents.com website records 15 finer examples of S-31 based on strict early copper grading. However, two of the finer pieces are held in the American Numismatic Society collection, and three others have not been seen for over 50 years. The present piece is one of the ten finest collectible examples of the variety. Ex: Gibson Collection (Stack’s, 11/1974), lot 17; later, Harmer Rooke Numismatists, Ltd. (12/1988), lot 329; Thomas Caldwell (Northeast Numismatics); Auction ’89 (David W. Akers, 7/1989), lot 1005; Denis W. Loring (8/1989); John B. McDonald (1/1997); Robert C. Clark (Philadelphia ANA, Bowers and Merena, 8/2000), lot 225; Chris Victor-McCawley (8/1/2003); Terry S. Denman; Chris Victor-McCawley (circa 2018); later, eBay (12/2024).
