1806 1/2 C Large 6, Stems, C-4, B-4, R.1, MS64 Red PCGS. Manley Die State 1 as always according to his reference although a later die state exists with delicate clash marks below Liberty's chin and above the F in HALF. While the 1806 C-4 half cent with the large 6 and reverse stems is the most plentiful variety of the year it is rarely seen with full red mint color. This is just the 12th appearance of an example designated Red in all our auctions since 1993 and just the fourth graded MS64 Red with none finer. PCGS has certified one MS64+ Red and one MS64 Red (offered here) with none finer (7/26). NGC has also graded one submission as MS64 Red with none finer. This example that is new to the Heritage archives has slight mellowing of the mint color on the obverse high points. Typical toning spots are key identifiers and include a dark spot over the I of UNITED and the E of AMERICA. In his Half Cent Encyclopedia that was published more than 40 years ago, Walter Breen reported a hoard of red uncirculated examples of this variety that the Chapman brothers handled at least 75 years earlier and now more than 120 years ago.
