1794 1C Head of 1794, S-21, B-5, R.3, MS65+ Brown PCGS. Breen Die State III, Heck Die State 2.5. A die crack from the border through the top left serif of the B in LIBERTY arcs through the field into the cap. Faint clash marks are visible at the junction of the cap and hair below the repunched L. Heavy clash marks are evident inside the wreath.      The provenance section of 1794largecents.com records this example as the finest known S-21 Flat Pole cent with just one other Mint State example that we handled as part of the first Husak sale in 2008. Both sides exhibit die roughness that is sometimes described as die rust. Faded mint red in the protected areas highlights the satin surfaces of this Gem cent that presents exceptional eye appeal. Provenance identifiers include a small toning spot on the jaw, a small field mark off the third curl, and trivial marks on the end of the pole. Based on the strict early copper grading standards, this lovely cent is graded MS61 (Del Bland) or MS62 (Bob Grellman and Bill Noyes). This example is tied for 19th finest of all 1794 cents submitted to PCGS and is the sole finest attributed S-21 cent sent to that grading service (7/26). Ex Henry C. Colvin; Allen D. Colvin; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (French's #80, 10/1962), lot 25; Louis Helfenstein (Lester Merkin, 8/1964), lot 2; Dr. Herbert I. Ketterman; James A. Hayes; Lester Merkin (privately, 1/1977); Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz (3/1977); R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (2//23/1992); Eric Streiner; Jay Parrino (The Mint); Superior (5/1995), lot 2021; Walter J. Husak (4/19/1997); Dr. Thomas Turissini (1/5/2011); Walter J. Husak; The Liberty Cap Foundation; Heritage with Early Cents Auctions (1/2024), lot 2015.
