1794 1C Head of 1794, S-24, B-8, R.1, MS64+ Brown NGC. Breen Die State V, Heck Die State 6. Light die erosion appears on both sides. Obverse die cracks extend down from the border through the L in LIBERTY to the hair, and up from the border right of the 4, to the bust and neck. Dr. Sheldon wrote that his father called this the "Apple Cheek" variety and the name has remained popular with today's collectors for the rounded cheek. That feature is also the reason that this plentiful variety is rarely seen in top grades. This recent European discovery (circa 2017) visits the condition census for the Apple Cheek variety identified as Sheldon-24 and is tied for the sixth finest known per the census at 1794Largecents.com. Liberty's cheek appears in rounded relief, with slight softness noted on the highest points of the hair and on the high points of the reverse, typical of nearly all known examples. A short scratch angles down from the border over the O in OF. Both sides exhibit lovely chocolate-brown surfaces with full cartwheel luster and hints of faded mint red in the protected areas. This is the fourth finest certified S-24 cent and one of just nine or ten certified Mint State examples (7/26). The only finer examples known to us are the Pogue Collection MS67 Red and Brown example, the Eliasberg coin graded MS66+ PCGS, and the Garrett example that PCGS grades MS65. The collector seeking an attractive high-grade example of the Apple Cheek should carefully consider this opportunity. Ex: European Discovery; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2018), lot 4740; Stack's Bowers (3/2024), lot 4009. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
