1794 1C Head of 1794, Severed Locks, S-25, B-15, R.3, MS63 Brown NGC. Breen Die State II, Heck Die State 2. Myriad clashmarks are noted on both sides, prior to the appearance of reverse die cracks for the later Heck die states. Hints of faded mint red are evident in the protected areas of this glossy olive and chocolate-brown cent that exhibits satin surfaces, resulting in excellent eye appeal. A small planchet chip below Liberty’s eye will identify this example that has trivial planchet marks in the right obverse field, the result of an uneven strike that is typical for the variety.      Bill Noyes and the late Del Bland each record this example as the finest known of the variety that is the only example to carry a Mint State grade according to EAC standards. This is just the third auction appearance of this important cent since 1920 when Thomas Lindsey Elder wrote: "Hays 22. Medium brown color. Choice uncirculated, even color and well centered. Excessively rare thus." This example was the third of four consecutive lots of Uncirculated 1794 cents. The others were cataloged as Hays 14 (S-57), Hays-17 (S-24), and Hays-43 (S-22). Ex: Thomas L. Elder (4/1920), lot 1498; Gottleib Kraft; Virgil M. Brand; Carl Wurtzbach (1925); Henry C. Hines (1944); Dr. William H. Sheldon (4/19/1972); R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (2/23/1992); Eric Streiner; Anthony J. Terranova (4/1994); Dr. Thomas Turissini (6/15/2004, via Del Bland); Larry A. Bland (Early Cents Auctions, 9/2022), lot 505; Chris Victor-McCawley (10/2024).
