1794 1C Head of 1794, Short Bust, S-44, B-33, R.1, MS63 Brown PCGS. CAC. Breen Die State V, Heck Die State 6. Breen considered this the terminal die state for the variety. Today’s observers, including Chuck Heck in Die States of 1794 United States Large Cents, record one later die state. The usual obverse and reverse die cracks are fully evident on this lovely cent. Delicate clash marks are seen in the usual locations. Bill Noyes ranks this example as the fourth finest known (tied) and Del Bland recorded its status as tied for second finest known. Regardless of this rank, it is an important, well-provenanced example of a common variety that is rarely seen in high grades. This is the plate coin in Walter Breen’s Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents 1793-1814 that this cataloger edited for publication 26 years ago. The plate coins from that reference came from a variety of sources including photo files from older catalogs, images from the late Jack Collins, and photographs that were taken specifically for the book, including the collection of C. Douglas Smith. Small marks are noted on Liberty's neck, limiting the grade, with trivial field marks that remain from the planchet before this impression was taken. A thin, old scratch is blended into the reverse field beneath AMER. Splashes of steel toning are observed on the glossy chestnut and walnut-brown surfaces. Ex: Clarence S.
