1794 1C Head of 1794, Fallen 4, S-63, B-37, R.2, MS62 Brown PCGS. CAC. Breen Die State II, Heck Die State 2. Clashmarks are noted on both sides with date repunching visible on all four digits. This variety is known by its familiar "Fallen 4" nickname that Dr. Maris proposed, although that digit is properly positioned next to the high 9 that leans slightly to the left and nearly touches the bust. Perhaps S.H. Chapman's "Raised 9" is a better name for this variety. The reverse die has been the subject of differing opinions. At the 1984 Coinage of the Americas Conference, Walter Breen presented his opinion that the die was retooled to produce the Starred Reverse cent. Soon afterward in 1986, Pete Smith argued in The Story of the Starred Reverse Cent that Breen was incorrect. Following that, Jim Neiswinter published an article in Penny-Wise (July 1991) that compared the reverse die to another die used for four of the six 1793 Liberty Cap cents. Photographic overlays proved Neiswinter's theory is correct. The reverse die of this S-63 cent is the same that was previously used for 1793 S-13, 14, 16, and NC-6. At the website 1794largecents.com, this example is tied with two others for the second finest known including one in the ANS collection. In his early copper database, Bill Noyes records this example as the finest known S-63 cent. Despite trivial marks that include a small diagonal nick on the bust over the crossbar of the 4, this lovely cent has a high degree of eye appeal with glossy chocolate and steel-brown surfaces that retain tinges of mint red within the left branch of the wreath.
