1798 1C First Hair Style, S-161, B-22, R.2, MS63 Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Naftzger-Reynolds. Breen Die State XI. Nearly the terminal die state with the reverse rim break extending over ATES. Reverse die states range from lightly cracked over STATES to broken as seen here. This lovely piece has rich and glossy bluish-brown surfaces with traces of original mint color in protected areas, especially on the obverse. The obverse is plated in Clapp’s 1798-1799 reference, in Sheldon’s Early American Cents, and in that author’s Penny Whimsy. The reverse is plated in the 1991 Noyes photo book. Del Bland grades this piece MS61, and Bill Noyes assigned an MS60+ grade in 1991, raising the grade to MS63 in 2005. Noyes and Bland agree that this is the only collectible Mint State survivors from the S-161 dies along with one Mint State piece in the ANS Collection.
