1804 1C S-266, B-1, R.2, XF40 PCGS. Breen Die State IV. The obverse has a rim break over RTY and the reverse has a break over MERI, nearly reach the left top of the C in AMERICA. This is the latest of three basic die states that Walter Breen identified as his states II, III, and IV. Breen's earliest state has no obverse die crack, state II has an obverse crack through the tops of ERT, state III has an obverse rim break but no reverse break, and state IV as here exhibits obverse and reverse rim breaks. The mahogany and steel-brown surfaces of this pleasing piece host trivial handling marks with light verdigris amongst letters on the reverse. Ex: Stack's Bowers (8/2011), lot 7224. From The Round Lake Collection. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
