1806 1C S-270, B-1, R.1, MS63 Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Nancy & Bryan Collection. Breen Die State III. A short, irregular die crack extends into the field from the border at 4 o'clock. Once considered rare, the 1806 cents are plentiful. However, high grade pieces like the present coin are seldom encountered. Mint records show the production of 348,000 cents in 1806, all minted in the first half of the year and likely including coins dated 1805. The production of 348,000 cents from a single die pair is, in the words of Breen, "impossibly high for this period." This example is the fifth finest 1806 cent in the Noyes census. Lustrous medium brown surfaces host blue-steel and faded mint red. Trivial marks prevent a higher numerical grade and identify the provenance. This lovely cent is positioned high on the list of PCGS certified examples. PCGS Population: 4 in 63 Brown, 3 finer (7/26).
