1870-S G$1 MS65 PCGS. The 1870 was the final year that San Francisco produced the Indian Princess gold dollar with just 3,000 coins, the lowest mintage in its history as well. The survivorship in Mint State condition is exceptionally scarce with as few as 35 to 50 examples surviving. This piece displays brilliant yellow-gold luster free from even a modicum of toning. The strike is exceptional with sharp details within the hair and only slight weakness on the wreath’s left boll. Two small marks present between the D and S of UNITED STATES as well as some hairlines right of the ribbon serve as pedigree markers. The issue is rare at MS65 and only a lone example has been reported numerically finer at PCGS (7/26) Ex: Alison Park Collection (Stack’s, 8/2004), lot 920; FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/2005), lot 30392; Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2014), lot 5682.
