1838 $2 1/2 HM-1, R.3, MS65 NGC. Outstanding orange-gold surfaces are coated in billowing satiny luster. All devices are intricately detailed on both sides. A few minor nicks around the neck scarcely require mention, and are very minor, as the Gem grade suggests. The HM-1 is the sole die marriage of 1838 quarter eagles, and the reverse is carried over from the proof issues of 1837. While this issue is available in the lower regions of Mint State, it becomes quite rare at the upper echelons. At most two certifications exist at the MS65 level, as the current NGC coin has apparently been delisted. Only two finer certifications exist at PCGS as well.
