1837 $2 1/2 HM-3, JD-1, R.7, PR63 Cameo NGC. White-gold coloration on the devices contrasts significantly with cameo frosting in the fields, creating wonderful eye appeal. Strong striking detail is present on 11 of the 13 stars, as well as the dentils of both sides. The only weakness exists in the center around the BE of LIBERTY as well as the curls below the ear and at the end of the headband on the obverse, where reverse weakness is limited to the feathers southwest of the shield. Light hairlines exist in the fields of both sides, but all are minor. Some slight rim dings above the ITE of UNITED similarly evade notice. All examples of proofs known for this year originate from one die pairing: the HM-3. The obverse is only found on this die marriage, anticipating the practice of proof-only obverses that became the norm in the 1840s. The reverse exhibits just two lines in each shield stripe (known as "two pale gules" in heraldry parlance), also setting it apart from the other two die marriages of 1837. This reverse die was subsequently used to strike all 1838 quarter eagles. In addition to all proofs of this year being examples of HM-3, this is considered to be a proof-only die marriage, despite three of the six known examples being circulated. Of the three known unimpaired examples, one is permanently impounded in the Smithsonian Institution, leaving just two available to collectors: the present offering and the example we sold as part of the Joan Zieg Steinbrenner collection in 2019. Given the present offering's extreme rarity, Cameo contrast, and overall status as a prized early gold proof, series specialists should take advantage of this rare opportunity for its acquisition.
