1846-D/D $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. CAC. VP-001, Variety 7-L. Orange-gold surfaces contain hints of white-gold on the obverse and russet-brown in the protected areas of both sides. Marks between the headband and star 5, on the rim opposite star 4, and between the bust and star 1, represent the only abrasions of note. Eye appeal is original and supremely attractive. Winter lists five die marriages of 1846-D quarter eagles, and the present Variety 7-L is the only one with the D/D repunched mintmark. A substantial portion of the loop of the D is embedded in the stem, with a significant amount of the stem protruding left of the upright of D. The repunching is seen significantly left of the second, fully realized punch. The present offering exhibits the usually seen light die crack from the top of the D in UNITED through the lower half of STATES to the bottoms of OF to the right wing.
