1869 $2 1/2 JD-1, High R.6, PR64 Cameo NGC. CAC. The Philadelphia Mint reported an official 1869 mintage of only 25 quarter eagle proofs. In United States Proof Coins, John Dannreuther contends that this total may have been supplemented later: "The 25 coins struck in Proof for this year may have been augmented by a few more examples, as was usual during the 1858 to 1885 era. There are differences in the rotation of the National Numismatic Collection and other examples examined. The rarity of this date in Proof indicates that it would have been only a few coins produced with only 12 to 14 survivors. Since there are two obviously different rotations, a second group must have been struck to sate the demand." This Choice Cameo proof is a deeply colored reddish-gold coin that exhibits brightly reflective fields and thickly frosted devices, expectantly sharp for a proof striking. The coin is pedigreed by small planchet flaws (as struck) in the obverse field near Liberty's portrait and another beneath the eagle's left (facing) wing. The reverse is rotated a few degrees clockwise from normal coin alignment, suggesting that this example is perhaps one of the additional strikes John Dannreuther references. The 1869 issue is conditionally rare in both circulation strikes and proofs. Our last encounter with an 1869 Cameo proof was another NGC PR64 Cameo 25 years ago in 2001.
