1880 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.6, PR65+ Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Starting in 1880 and continuing into the future, the Mint's sale of proofs-by-set was augmented by sales of individual gold proofs by denomination. In later years, well-heeled collectors like Virgil Brand took full advantage, often ordering multiple quarter eagle proofs in groups of 10 or more at a time. No such bonanza benefitted the 1880 quarter eagles, since survivors are limited to 14 to 18 proofs in all grades according to John Dannreuther's estimate. The Bowers' quarter eagle reference suggests 18 to 22 proofs survive from the 36-piece quarter eagle proof mintage. Importantly, only 2,960 1880 quarter eagle circulation strikes were produced, adding pressure on the extant high-grade proofs both then and now. This high-end Gem Deep Cameo example is among the few finest 1880 quarter eagle proofs to survive. Stark, profound contrast exists between the frosted, blond-gold devices and the exceptionally well-mirrored orange to reddish-gold fields throughout this immaculately preserved example. The devices in particular are pristine and sharp, while the surfaces throughout are free of all but a couple of undistracting hairlines, all of which confirm the excellent preservation and confirm the MS65+ Deep Cameo PCGS grade. From the shallow pool of three dozen proofs reportedly struck, Deep Cameo Gems are understandably rare and seldom seen. The CAC green approval further separates this piece from its small cohort of top survivors. PCGS reports only seven submissions in PR65 Deep Cameo including this single Plus-Graded Gem, with two PR66 Deep Cameos finer.
