1882 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.6, PR65 PCGS. CAC. The 1882 Liberty quarter eagle proof mintage is only 67 pieces and yet the issue holds the largest proof production for the denomination since the Civil War years. While widely popular today, Liberty Head quarter eagle proofs were not in high demand when struck. The series did not consistently exceed even 100 proofs per year until 1892. John Dannreuther estimates only 20-24 of the 1882 proofs have survived.      Sharply struck devices on deep orange-gold surfaces highlight this exceptional 1882 Gem proof. The reflective fields display subtle orange-peel effect decorated by delicate rose-gold overtones that deepen slightly on the reverse. Hazy frost accents the smooth motifs and fall just short of a Cameo designation. The overall quality is exceptional as evidenced by the CAC green sticker. This is the lone PR65 with such endorsement. PCGS reports only two numerically finer pieces in non-Cameo (7/26). The coin remains housed in a PCGS generation 3.1 green label holder. PCGS Population: 4 in 65, 2 finer.
