1888 $2 1/2 PR66 Cameo PCGS. CAC. JD-1, R.5. The proof mintage reported by John Dannreuther is 92 pieces, accompanying a modest circulation strike production numbering just over 16,000 coins in 1888. The Philadelphia Mint concentrated on eagles and double eagles in the late 1880s (in part, based on their usefulness in foreign trade), with little interest in expanding proof production. A trio of misplaced digits in the dentils (the top curves of 8s) and a slightly different date position that angles slightly downhill distinguishes true proof quarter eagles of this date from prooflike circulation strikes. Proof quality remained strong in 1888 as demonstrated by this splendid orange-gold Premium Gem. It rightfully displays CAC endorsement. Faint orange-peel texture visits the flashy mirrored fields, contrasting boldly against frosted, fully struck devices. Eye appeal is fantastic.
