1899 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.4, PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. The mintage of the 1899 proof quarter eagle was scarce with just 150 coins minted, and survivorship has dwindled this to between 90 to 100 examples as estimated by John Dannreuther. The issue is incredibly scarce in Deep Cameo with only 48 pieces seen by PCGS which likely includes resubmissions given the small population and likely survivorship of the issue. Attractive, frosted honey-gold luster rests alongside the deeply reflective fields. The piece is free from any debilitating blemishes that might demean it, though a small mark is present just below the eye as well as a small divot in the shield which both serves as a pedigree marker. The strike is exquisite with faultless sharpness on Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathering. This Premium Gem example will be an excellent Registry contender for collectors looking to compete.
