1883 G$1 Centered Date, JD-1, High R.5, PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. The introduction of the Morgan silver dollar in 1878 consumed significant resources at the Mint and often lead to adjustments in other denominations. Gold dollar commercial strikes became erratic for the remainder of the series, while proof figures reflected slow and steady increases. The 1883 proof issue saw a 65% increase from the prior year with a mintage of 207 coins, curiously utilizing three die pairings for the issue. This Gem in Deep Cameo is JD-1 and shows a slightly repunched date. This spectacular JD-1 displays deeply mirrored honey-gold fields and razor-sharp design emblems layered in frosty luster. The orange peel effect seen on many proofs of this era is present, and John Dannreuther in United States Proof Coins comments on this characteristic: "This phenomenon was once thought to be confined only to Proof gold issues, in fact it was used by many numismatists to separate the two striking formats, but researcher Chris Pilliod proved that the orange peel effect was the result of overheating the planchets." The 1883 proof is seldom seen, and Deep Cameo pieces that include endorsement from CAC are conditionally rare. PCGS and NGC, combined, report a total of only 14 pieces in Deep and Ultra Cameo of which only five coins are numerically finer than this exceptional Gem proof.
