1842-O $10 AU58 NGC. Winter-3. The 27,400-piece mintage survives in grades averaging in the VF to XF range, but this New Orleans date seldom approaches or exceeds a full Mint State grade. The present AU58 example is one of fewer than three dozen examples at the near-Mint level, most of which exist in NGC holders. This orange-gold example is well-struck with attractive orange-gold color that retains plentiful mint luster. Tiny marks and abrasions dot the surfaces as might be expected for an 1842-O ten dollar gold exposed to any kind of transport or circulation. Doug Winter writes, "Virtually all known 1842-O eagles are seen with deep, dense abrasions." The marks on this coin are comparatively small and, while frequent, do not overly diminish the eye appeal. Perhaps as few as 200 to 300 1842-O eagles survive in all circulated grades combined, plus another dozen or so Uncirculated examples -- the finest of which is a solitary MS63 example.
