1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim, MS63 PCGS. CAC. An exceptionally sharp piece, this Select Flat Rim High Relief shows a delightful combination of glistening mint luster and swirling die striations, which produce ample eye appeal across the sharp and well-preserved devices. The Capitol building and adjacent stars are especially bold. Only a few dozen Flat Rim coins in this grade carry CAC endorsement. The Flat Rim variant of the High Relief is slightly scarcer than its Wire Rim counterpart. Multiple die impressions needed to strike these coins caused metal to slowly seep in between the dies and the collar, creating a fin of metal around the coin that caused stacking problems. An alteration to the planchet upset solved the issue, and the subsequent coinage of High Reliefs are known as Flat Rim coins. Differentiating between Wire Rim and Flat Rim coins involves studying the rims for evidence of the previous Wire Rim feature. The absence of it identifies a Flat Rim coin. The Wire Rim feature had nothing to do with strike sharpness, thus Flat Rim coins, like the present, are as boldly struck as any High Relief. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.
