British India. Bengal Presidency brass Famine Rupee Token 1874 MS63 NGC, KM-Tn2, Prid-32. A scarce example of the token coinage issued during the Great Famine of 1874. Retaining a velveteen sheen of lemon upon brass surfaces. These grain Tokens were issued by the Bengal Presidency under Lieutenant-Governor Richard Temple in response to the Bihar (Bengal) famine of 1873-1874. The well-executed famine relief resulted in relatively few deaths in the region, though the wide-scale relief effort drew criticism from the British government as an excessive measure, leading to later policies of restraint when facing such disasters.
