D(aniel) N. Morgan Courtesy Autographed First Issue Denomination Set PMG Graded. Fr. 1230 Milton 1R5.4m 5¢; Fr. 1242 Milton 1R10.4j 10¢; Fr. 1281 Milton 1R25.4i 25¢; Fr. 1312 Milton 1R50.4i 50¢. All four representatives in this denomination set bear the autograph of D(aniel) N(ash) Morgan, the 19th Treasurer of the United States from 1893-97. He has signed his name in an identical spot on each note at upper center as "D.N. Morgan / Treas of US 1893-1897." The Fr. 1230 note grades About Uncirculated 55 EPQ, the Fr. 1242 example grades Extremely Fine 40 EPQ, the Fr. 1281 piece grades About Uncirculated 53 EPQ, and the Fr. 1312 representative grades Choice Extremely Fine 45. A denomination set from this issue with any courtesy autograph would be exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to assemble, and Morgan's signature is exceptionally challenging to acquire on Fractionals. Only the most well connected collectors were privileged to obtain sets of courtesy autographed Fractionals in the early days of numismatics. One of those collectors was none other than F.C.C. Boyd. He had both the means and connections to build this and many other sets. After Boyd's death, John J. Ford, Jr. bought a large amount of the Boyd Collection from his widow. The four notes in this lot were previously lot 859 in the October 11, 2007 Part XIX Ford sale. Our consignor was able to acquire it at our auction of the Tobacco Family Collection in April 2021. The item count is one due to all four notes being in one PMG multinote holder. From The William S. George Collection HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
