Military Endorsement "I.T. Winnemore Maj. & AQM" T6 $50 1861 PF-1 Cr. 6 PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ. A total of 5,798 T6 $50s, printed by the New Orleans branch office of the ABNCo, using the imprint of the Southern Bank Note Co. in order to give the New York parent plausible deniability, were issued between August 25 and September 23, 1861. This note was processed on September 6, 1861, and quickly issued to the field on September 16, 1861, by Major and Assistant Quarter Master Isaac T. Winnemore as evidenced by his manuscript endorsement on the back. Winnemore was appointed from the state of Louisiana on June 11, 1861, and is believed to have issued this note from New Orleans. After New Orleans fell at the end of April 1862, Winnemore would go on to serve under the command of General John C. Breckinridge. The end of the war saw Winnemore as a major and quartermaster with the forces of General Jubal Early. He surrendered and was paroled on May 24, 1865, at Augusta, Georgia. Winnemore was, however, a native of Pennsylvania and eventually his character was questioned because of his northern origins. President Jefferson Davis refused to endorse him and the Confederate Congress rejected his appointment for a permanent position in the Quarter Master Department. Winnemore was used in a provisional capacity thereafter. The note is well printed on excellent red fiber bank note paper and is fully framed- a somewhat uncommon situation on a type which is often found tightly or poorly trimmed. We are aware of three examples of this type bearing Winnemore's endorsement at present. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
