Alexandria, VA- Bank of the Old Dominion $5 18__ as G46a as Jones-Littlefield BA30-07 Proof PMG About Uncirculated 55. The bank was authorized as an Independent (free) Bank in 1851 and remained in business until sometime shortly after the Civil War. While the bank continued to elect directors and officers into the 1870s, it likely remained only nominally open in order to wrap up its affairs in liquidation. By 1871, four distributions of assets had been made. The $5 design features Commerce seated with a sailing vessel in the distance. A large portrait of Washington is at bottom left and an allegorical woman, perhaps representing America, is standing by a shield and a seated Native American woman, holding the Stars and Stripes at right. The note is printed on India paper with a very light reddish-brown undertint and six POCs in the signature lines. It is similar to Haxby G46a and Jones-Littlefield BA30-07 except that it has no red FIVE protector but does have the faint undertint. This is the only example known to us at present.
