Fr. 42 $2 1869 Legal Tender PCGS Banknote Gem Unc 65 PPQ. Part of the so-called Rainbow series, so named for the multitude of colors appearing on these notes, this $2, featuring a portrait of Jefferson engraved by Charles Burt and the U.S. Capitol engraved by Louis Delnoce and William Chorlton, utilized paper provided by the Willcox Company which had a very visible localized blue stain as part of the paper formulation to deter counterfeiting. Willcox paper of various types had been used on United States paper money since the Revolution, but that ended when Willcox refused to open his books to the government in 1879 (the government wanted to determine if "a fair and equitable price" was being charged). The contract was subsequently awarded to Crane Paper Company and has remained with them ever since. This example is beautifully printed with vibrant red, green, and black colors on paper with the aforementioned dark blue localized stain and excellent margins, looking like it could have come off of the press yesterday. This note, which has some legitimate claims to an even higher grade, will enhance any collection to which it is added. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
