Fr. 190b $10 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note PCGS Banknote Extremely Fine 40. A high grade example for this middle-of-the-book Friedberg number with these rarities gaining more and more adherents for these specialized and very desirable types that saw circulation only during the Civil War years. This "Oct. 15, 1864" dated $10 has earned an unusually high grade for a Fr. 190b. Track & Price lists a total of 109 serial numbers for this Friedberg number and seven of those are confined to either four different Federal Reserve Bank collections, the ANA Museum, the American Numismatic Society, or the Bureau of Public Debt. Of the remaining 102 examples, a total of only three notes are graded higher and a single piece is graded equal by either of the two major third party grading services or as a raw note. This is a mere pittance in regards to the total enumerated population of this Friedberg number. This is a delightful example that displays favorably on both sides. The ink and paper colors are bright and vivid, while the bronze overprint has toned to a nice subdued color that in no way has impaired the paper of this majestic note. The edges are clear of the design which is always a plus for these notes that helped in financing the preservation of the Union. The third party back label mentions a minor restoration, but any such restoration appears to be nothing more than a simple reinforcing of a partially open vertical center fold.
