Fr. 191a $20 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note PMG Very Fine 30. The bronze overprint is nicely preserved on this white paper and dark ink "middle of the book" note. Patriotic vignettes include Victory at left and Mortar Firing at bottom center. President Lincoln's portrait is at right. This note has an "Aug. 15, 1864" date and therefore Lincoln's portrait was used on this design during his lifetime. The back design has an interest table that tells us that this $20 note had a redemption value of $23.88 at the end of its three year term. This is one of the better Fr. 191a notes in private hands as about three-fourths of the known pieces have recorded grades below VF 30. The $20 in this lot does have a minor restoration of a thin strip along the top edge, but it is still a desirable representative for the grade as this skillful work comes into view only when the note is backlit.
