Fr. 214 $10 1879 Refunding Certificate PMG About Uncirculated 55. Serial number A94502-B in this lot has an illustrious provenance with its first recorded owner being Dallas oilman and 1953 Dallas Coin Club president Robert F. Schermerhorn. The depth of The Schermerhorn Collection can be seen by the fact that his name is listed as a previous owner for approximately 450 notes in United States Paper Money Records compiled by Martin Gengerke. Mr. Schermerhorn died on August 28, 1957, at the age of 49. Many notes from the Schermerhorn estate were purchased by fellow Dallasites William Philpott and Harry Bass. Mr. Bass acquired the Refunding Certificate in this lot at that time. Bass died at the age of 71 on April 4, 1998, and this note went to auction in 1999. Since then it has been graded by both PCGS and PMG; each time it has earned a grade of 55 and a comment free third party holder. The last PMG 55 example that we auctioned had the EPQ grade modifier and realized $10,800 in our January 2024 auction. Our current offering has much of the same appearance down to the margins, color, and natural paper wave. Bidders should be prepared to break the $10,000 barrier for this attractive example.
