1865 1C Fancy 5 MS66 Red NGC. Snow-17. The Guide Book separates the 1865 Indian cent mintage (just over 35.4 million pieces) into the Plain 5 and the Fancy 5 designs. The Fancy 5 production is estimated slightly higher than the Plain 5 and logically is more plentiful, but both date varieties are challenging in Red designations above the Choice grade level. This Red Premium Gem is lustrous and well-struck with radiant orange and gold color. Well-preserved surfaces show only a few occasional, microscopic carbon specks. Although NGC shows a single example in MS67 Red and Brown, neither NGC or PCGS report any numerically finer Fancy 5 pieces in full Red color. NGC Census: 5 in 66, 0 finer (8/26). Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2002), lot 5079. From The West Texas Collection. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
