1856 1C Snow-9 PR62 PCGS. 71.6 grains. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent was a transitional piece designed to replace the incumbent large cent with with a coin of a more manageable size. Along with a smaller diameter the Flying Eagle cent introduced a new design that was struck in a copper-nickel alloy. The PCGS insert on this coin lists the alloy as 87% copper, 12% nickel, and 0.3% iron. Initially designated as the Judd-180 pattern coin, the Flying Eagle cent proved so popular that restrikes were made to satisfy collector demand. Proofs and commercial strikes were both produced and the estimated proof mintage per the Guide Book is a healthy but scarce-by-demand 2,000 coins. The Snow-9 variety is seen with a diagnostic center dot under the right serif of the N in CENT and certain diagnostic obverse die lines. This PR62 example is a original, well-patinated example displaying traces of old build-up in the recesses and along the device borders. The design elements are sharply struck and display mellowed chocolate-brown surfaces. The smooth fields are layered in satiny, semiglossy luster and, typical of the issue, are not deeply mirrored. A few scattered contact marks account for the grade although none are individually distracting. This 1856 Flying Eagle proof cent is an exceptional opportunity to acquire an historic first-year issue that is listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (6th edition).
