1864 1C L On Ribbon MS66 Red NGC. Snow-18. Only 5 million With L bronze Indian cents are estimated to have been struck from the overall 1864 mintage of just over 39.2 million pieces. Most of this issue is the No-L variant, but the With L pieces are not as scarce as the estimated production would suggest. Examples in fully Red condition, however, are notably scarce in Mint State. Many With L pieces show streaky or woodgrain surfaces from improper mixture of the bronze alloy planchets. This exceptional Premium Gem, however, earns the elusive Red designation that is highly sought after.      Fully radiant mint-red luster reveals copper-gold surfaces that are free distracting marks or carbon spots. The devices are well-struck with visible diamond outlines on Liberty's ribbon and James Longacre's ‘L' initial is on bold display. Clashmarks are visible on both sides and are characteristic of the Snow-18 variety. This Red Premium Gem is an exceptional coin from this important Indian cent bronze issue. Neither NGC or PCGS report any numerically finer 1864 With L coins in Red, although both services show single MS67 examples in Red and Brown. NGC Census: 6 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (8/26). Ex: Baltimore Signature (Heritage, 7/2003), lot 5274. From The West Texas Collection. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
