1864 1C Copper-Nickel PR67 S Cameo NGC. Snow-PR1. In 1864, most proof sets included the copper-nickel cent, since they were the first coins made that year. Only a few additional sets and singles sold in the middle months had bronze proofs. Some sets sold at the end of the year included proofs with the designer's "L" initial. Copper-nickel Indian cents with strong contrast are few and far between, especially those with Superb Gem quality. Between NGC and PCGS, there are just four Superb Gem copper-nickel proofs with Cameo designation. This amazing example has frosty, light-tan devices with deeply mirrored fields. Both sides display rose and gold accents that become more vibrant near the border, earning this coin the Star designation from NGC. There are no numerically finer examples reported at either NGC or PCGS -- including the non-Cameo and Ultra and Deep Cameo categories. This Superb Gem proof is the sole example in PR67 S Cameo at NGC. NGC Census: 3 in 67 Cameo (1 in 67 S), 0 finer (8/26).
