Belgian Congo Banque du Congo Belge 1000 Francs 10.4.1947 Pick 19b PMG Very Fine 30. A truly beautiful example of Waterlow & Sons' expertise at printing and engraving, this large-format 1000 Francs is a work of art. The front presents a coastal scene of Wagenia fishermen minding to their distinctive wooden fish traps. This centuries-old fishing technique using wooden scaffolds supporting large cone-shaped wicker baskets is a tradition that continues today. On the back, a large portrait at right, framed by leaves, depicts a Baluba boy from the central region of the Belgian Congo with traditional chest scarification. At left, two musicians play instruments either side of the leopard watermark. Beyond its incredible design and tasteful palette, the example offered here is particularly attractive for its remarkable condition. At time of cataloging, only one example is recorded above Very Fine in the PMG Population Report, demonstrating how scarce the variety is in high grades. Minor stains are mentioned on the holder, but the note retains excellent overall eye appeal. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
