British North Borneo British North Borneo Company 10 Dollars 1.1.1927 Pick 22 PMG Very Fine 20. British North Borneo issued paper money for only half a century. Not only does this make it a scarce area of collecting, but the individual varieties are also rare, with subtle differences such as typeface, ink color, or guilloche shape. This handsome 10 Dollar note bears the signatures of William Smelt and Arnold Russell Rivett, the former a highly decorated Royal Air Force pilot during the First World War who arrived in Sandakan in 1925 to serve as District Treasurer. These signatures and the 1927 date accompany the Mount Kinabalu vignette, a consistent feature of the middle and higher denominations of the 1927?1938 series. On the back, a rhombus design frames the central denomination guilloche, a feature unique to the 10 Dollar denomination across all British North Borneo currency. This example is particularly scarce in higher grades, with no examples currently recorded above Very Fine in the PMG Population Report at time of cataloging. Minor rust is mentioned on the holder.
