Cuba Republica de Cuba 1000 Pesos 6.9.1869 Pick 60 PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. This offering represents an exceptionally rare variety. It is the highest denomination of the 1868?1876 La Republica de Cuba series, issued during the Ten Years' War, Cuba's first major war of independence against Spanish rule. This represents a distinct period of Cuba's monetary history and should not be confused with the later Republic, which issued its own paper money from 1934 onwards. The revolutionary Republic was declared in 1868 by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, whose hand signature appears on the note offered here. Just two denominations were produced bearing the date 1869, $500 and $1000, sharing the same design but printed in different colors. This $1000 is printed in black and red inks, with the denomination engraved on the back. The front is adorned with a number of allegorical figures. At left, the winged personification of Liberty and the Union, her diadem inscribed "LIBERTY" and the bound bundle tied as a Roman fasces at her side is labeled "UNION". At right, the allegorical figures of Agriculture, Commerce, and Industry are seated together, a common trio found in nineteenth century banknote design. Beyond its historical and aesthetic appeal, the note itself is highly scarce. At time of cataloging, just one example is recorded in a higher grade in the PMG Population Report and, with just over twenty examples recorded overall, the grade offered here represents an impressive level of preservation. This example is also distinguished by an Exceptional Paper Quality status. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
