Serial Number 1 Ethiopia Bank of Ethiopia 100 Thalers 1.5.1932 Pick 10 PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Issued just one year after Emperor Haile Selassie I requested that the country to be known internationally as Ethiopia, which the country had been using for centuries, instead of Abyssinia. This series marked an important moment in the nation's history. In 1931, the Ethiopian government acquired the Bank of Abyssinia branch from the Bank of Egypt and issued the first series of notes under the new issuing authority. Although denominated in Thalers, the currency was widely known in Ethiopia as birr, meaning 'silver', or talari, a local variation of thaler. This high denomination note is a long-standing favorite among collectors. The design boasts a distinctive blue and mauve color palette and a finely engraved elephant vignette. Adding to its appeal, this example bears Serial Number 1, the first note issued as the variety, which began with the prefix D. This note is extremely scarce in high grades, with only three examples recorded in higher grades in the PMG Population Report at time of cataloging. From the Bruce Smart Collection.
