France Banque de France 500 Francs 29.3.1872 Pick 53b PMG Very Fine 20. While this beautiful note is rare in any grade, the example offered here is particularly desirable, with just one example recorded in a higher grade in the PMG Population Report at time of cataloging. The large ornate oval on the front incorporates a caduceus flanked by cherubs, a cornucopia, portrait medallions at left and right, and an allegorical female figure representing Law at bottom center. The back presents additional allegorical figures within a similarly elaborate oval composition. Unlike earlier issues printed in the celestial blue ink imported from Saxony, which remained in use until 1872, this issue combines French-made blue ink with black for improved legibility. Tape repairs and pinholes are mentioned on the holder, but the clarity of printing and overall appeal remain strong. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
