France Banque de France 5000 Francs 1918 (ND 1938) Pick 76 PMG Very Fine 20. A spectacular Banque de France design, this artistic tableau combines Classical motifs with the refined style of French banknote printing. The imagery was adapted from a previously unissued plate prepared in 1891 and, bearing a 1918 date, takes on a particular significance in the aftermath of the First World War. Yet the 5000 Francs denomination was not introduced until 1938, giving the visuals an unintended poignancy as Europe approached another major conflict just a year later.
