The British East India Company was dissolved in 1874, during a decade in which far east remedies also captured the public's fancy. This certificate is likely a parody on these two situations issued by a patent medicine purveyor as an incentive to purchase hindustanee medicines. A $10 purchase earned a $5 refund. The $5 design features a male portrait at left and a vignette of America standing with a sword by a federal shield at right. A fully tinted green back displays the refund amount of $5.
