Sherwood ran a large three location mercantile business with stores in Milltown, Milwaukie, and Newton Centre, PA, with the Milltown store being a new addition in 1864. Rather than deal with redeeming scrip, Sherwood opted to have the Pittston Bank redeem his scrip when it was presented at the bank's counter in sums of even dollars. All of the notes have an identical design with a large eagle and federal shield vignette at center and a smaller vignette of the state coat of arms at bottom center.
