"Battle of Waterloo" Medal 1858-Dated MS64 Brown NGC, 35mm. By Félicien Rops. MEDAILLE DE - WATERLOO / DU DERNIER / DES / CHAUVINS - VOILA / TOUT CE / QUI RESTE, Satirical caricature // A SES COMPAGNONS DE RACLEE SA DERNIERE PAROLE.... SIGNE CAMBRONNE / REVERS / DE LA / MEDAILLE / 15 JUIN 1858. Considered a pioneer within Belgian comics, Félicien Rops was a versatile artist active during the late 1800s. Associated with the Symbolism art movement, Rops was an oil painter and print maker, though most notably an illustrator and caricaturist. His work is touted as the first Belgian examples of both a text comic and comic strips based on a recurring character. His satirical Médaille de Waterloo (1858) lithograph sparked controversy across Europe, depicting this Medal at the artwork's center. HID07901242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
