T60 $5 1863 PF-17 Cr. 456 PMG Very Fine 30. Serial number 27405-A with an issue date of "August, 1863" has the rarest watermark found on Confederate notes, that of "Hodgkinson & Co. Wookey Hole Mills." The uncancelled note is evenly circulated and resides in a comment free holder. It is a very nice representative for the grade and is designated as a "RV" for a rare variety with a rarity rating of R-11, 11 to 20 known, in the Pierre Fricke Field Edition 2014. This rarity has long been recognized dating back to the 1915 Bradbeer reference. This watermarked paper was manufactured in Wells, England and a small amount of reams were imported into the Confederacy. There was only one watermark per sheet of eight notes. The watermark takes up most of the space on the note. It can usually be identified due to the number of letters spread across a note even if they cannot be read. Fricke's Condition Census as listed on page 694 of, Collecting Confederate Paper Money 2005, lists nine notes in the grades of VG up to Net VF. However, five of those notes are in the collection of the Museum of the Confederacy. That makes our unlisted current offering all the more desirable, as it possesses not only rarity, but grade, and is right there at the top of the Condition Census. We have now offered this rare Fricke number three times, with the example in this lot participating in our auctions for a second time. It required a winning bid of $2,820 in September 2015. Our May 2026 Central States Numismatic Society auction produced several record winning bids for Confederate notes and the PF-17 in this lot may just join that exclusive club.
