Handwritten "Representing Nothing" / Lost Cause Poem T66 $50 1864 PF-6 Cr. UNL PMG Fine 12 Net. The "Representing Nothing" / Lost Cause Poem, well known among collectors of Confederate material, was originally penned by Major Sidney Alroy Jonas, a former major in the Confederate Army who returned after the war to Aberdeen, MS, where he founded the Aberdeen Examiner. The most widely accepted story concerning his authorship of the poem recounts that he penned it on the back of a T64 $500 note at the Powhatan Hotel in Richmond, VA, days after he was paroled. Through one Ms. Annie Rush, the poem was published in the New York Metropolitan Record, and credit was eventually given to the original author at a 1907 United Daughters of the Confederacy Reunion in Norfolk, VA. Confederate notes such as our current offering which bear the handwritten poem are far scarcer than their printed counterparts. PMG comments on paper damage which appears to have been caused by a fire. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
