Franz Joseph I gold Proof "Civil Merit" Medal 1888 PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC, Holzmair-115. 48mm. 83.38gm. By J. Tautenhayn. Struck to a weight of 24 Ducats. Awarded to Edward Horace Man (per edge inscription), a British administrator and philanthropist who, among other things, worked in the Nicobar Islands, studying and documenting the lives and culture of the native peoples. His writings were later published posthumously in a work titled The Nicobar Islands and Their People. A historic piece with fully struck features, rendered to bold relief alongside reflective fields that together yield a pleasing cameo contrast. Sold with case of issue. Ex.
