1839/6 1C F12 PCGS CAC - A Scarce and Highly Collectible 1839/6 Overdate with Smooth Chocolate-Brown Surfaces and CAC Approval.
The 1839 Coronet Head Large Cent belongs to the long-running Coronet Head series struck from 1816 through 1857, and this important 1839/6 overdate ranks among the most popular and valuable varieties of the series in all grades. From a total 1839 mintage of 3,128,661 pieces, the variety has an estimated survival of just 600 specimens across all grades, underscoring its considerable scarcity. This attractive F12 PCGS CAC example displays smooth, remarkably clean chocolate-brown surfaces with subtle mahogany undertones and no serious marks of consequence. The rarity becomes especially apparent at the upper end of the condition census, with the finest MS65+ PCGS CAC example realizing more than $370,000 in 2017. CAC-approved examples are infrequently offered, with no CAC specimen appearing at auction in nearly a decade. A lower grade VG08 PCGS CAC would cost around $1,500. Historically, 1839 was a transitional year for the large cent, marking the conclusion of the modified Matron Head designs and the introduction of the Braided Hair type, adding further numismatic interest to this celebrated overdate. CAC Price Guide: $1,800. Under $2,000 this coin is a no brainer for the value it represents.
