1809 50C CAPPED BUST III EDGE VF30 CACG - Superb Toning, Scarce Edge Variety, and Strong Specialist Appeal
This attractive 1809 Capped Bust half dollar displays superb, naturally appearing toning and the desirable O-111a III (R.3) Edge attribution. Despite the VF30 grade, considerable design detail remains, including well-defined curls, drapery, stars, eagle feathers, and shield lines. The wear is even and the surfaces are pleasing, with no singularly distracting abrasion, giving the coin an honest, attractive appearance and excellent eye appeal for the grade. Most importantly luster is evident and clear bold on this VF coin.
The O-111a is distinguished by the development of the horizontal reverse die crack, while the unusual III Edge adds another element of specialist interest. These characteristics make the variety particularly appealing to advanced collectors who pursue Capped Bust halves by Overton marriage, die state, and edge variety. The Capped Bust half dollar was still relatively new in 1809, having been introduced only two years earlier from John Reich’s design, and the numerous die and edge variations encountered within the series provide a tangible record of the early Mint’s evolving production methods.
Beyond the late die state and interest variety, the unique nature of this coin is its original surreal and cataclysmic colors evident on both the obverse and reverse. Finding colors on dates such as 1809 50C cannot be understated with a similarly toned but non-CAC example selling for $2,421 08/21 Sheridan Downey also in VF30. Comparing the aforementioned example to this, sure makes this coin seem like a bargain.
