Georgia Handwritten Payment Certificate £2 16s 0d December 23, 1792 Very Fine. Large format. Entirely handwritten. To William Tanner and signed by him also at bottom. The obligation states, "To going and returning from Columbia to Augusta, my attendance there, and procuring a Certified Copy of the Act of Confiscation of the State of South Carolina with the great Seal of the State. Received the contents of Joseph Watts in full." The Act of Confiscation in South Carolina was originally enacted in 1782 and was designed as a measure of punishment against Loyalists and other former British sympathizers by confiscating their real property. There were a number of subsequent acts along these lines that were enacted in the following years. A couple of minuscule edge tears in top border.
